Abstract
El 15 de octubre de 1879 las lluvias caídas de madrugada elevaron el caudal del río Segura y anegaron las calles de la ciudad y poblaciones de la huerta. Martínez Tornel, que fue testigo directo de los hechos, escribió esa misma mañana un artículo en El Diario de Murcia contando la tragedia y haciendo un llamamiento de socorro a todos los españoles desde el rey al último de los ciudadanos.
El suceso tuvo una repercusión internacional sin precedentes en la prensa y supuso un récord de ventas para El Diario de Murcia y un éxito periodístico para su director: José Martínez Tornel.
Este artículo se propone conocer el alcance y el objetivo de la campaña de prensa; las circunstancias en las cuales se desarrolló y las razones de su impacto dentro y fuera de España, así como analizar el tratamiento periodístico dado a la tragedia en una época en la que las noticias de sucesos eran proclives al sensacionalismo.
